Moses sent twelve spies into the land of Canaan to see what they were up against. They came back with their heads low, and their spirits broken saying, “we are not able to go up against this people; for they are stronger than we” (Numbers 13:31). They finish their evil report by saying, “we were in our own sight as grasshoppers” (Nu. 13:33).
But there were two, Joshua and Caleb, who came back with the right attitude. God told Moses that none of the children of Israel that had left Egypt would see the promised land except these two.
The reason for their reward?
The Lord said in Numbers 14:24 …Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly.
After Moses’s death, Joshua led the Israelites on over into the Promised Land complete with instructions from God to drive out whatever inhabitants were there. The Israelites had to fight them and drive them out of the land to fully possess the promised land. Forty-five years pass from the time God promised Joshua and Caleb the land to the time that Caleb finally claimed his portion.
Forty-five years of fighting.
Forty-five years of highs and lows, wins and losses.
Finally, after forty-five years, Caleb walked up to Joshua and said, “Now, then, just as the Lord promised, He has kept me alive for forty-five years…So here I am today, eight-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as He said” (Jos. 14:10-12).
There comes a time in our walk with the Lord that we must walk right up to the gates of hell and demand, “Satan, you have no authority in my life anymore. Jesus lived and died so that I could have life and have it more abundantly. I claim power and dominion over sin. Jesus promised me abundant life. I am here today to take it. In Jesus Name, I claim my mountain top with the Lord.”
Lord, help us to adjust our attitudes and boldly take hold of Your promises.
